Which words are counted on a page ?

When calculating word count data, we only consider the main content portion of the page and exclude elements such as navigation bars, footers, sidebars, comments, advertisements, and other non-content elements.

This process is not perfect and may not be accurate in all cases due to the wide variety of page structures, but it typically provides a good estimate of the amount of content on a page.
